How to Fix Your Wi-Fi (And Network) After a Power Outage
Just like most electrical devices we have today, your network needs electricity to operate. When a power outage happens, your internet connection can instantly shut down.

A sudden power surge or outage can cause serious damage to your router that can lead to a broken Wi-Fi (and internet) connection. These situations can happen more often when your modem and router are separate.
If you find yourself in this dilemma where your modem suddenly shuts down due to a power outage and you have no internet, there are steps you can take to assess the situation.
1. Start Off by Powering Down
- Power it Down
When your modem turns off after a power outage, we recommend that you power down your entire network, including your modem, router, switches, and other devices that are connected to it. - Give Everything a Minute to Rest
Keep the power off for at least one minute. You should also make sure that each device is powered down properly, so you'll want to check out your manufactures' recommendations before taking this step. - Start With Your Modem
Once the time has passed, try getting only the broadband modem started. Once it powers on fully, you can then follow this up with the router, switches, and the other connected devices. Give your network at least two minutes for it to try and reconnect to the internet.
2. Test Connectivity on Networked Devices
Once you see that the modem is now activated, it is time for you to test the connection on all devices connected to it. Checking that all computers, mobile phones, and other devices connected to the network have internet connections is important since it lets you know if the modem is working or not.
Go ahead and try browsing the web. See if the connection is fast or slow. While doing so, you should also check your servers and computers for data loss.
3. Still Offline? Check With Your ISP
After checking to see if there is no internet connectivity on all devices and seeing that the modem is not working properly, then the next thing you can do is to diagnose your outage.
You can call your ISP to find out if there is a service interruption in your area or if the issue is localized to you. From there, they can forward you to a representative who will check on your behalf.
Here is a list of popular business ISPs with links to their support portals:

These tips provided can help you analyze your modem and check if you are connected to their network. This can be very useful, especially once you notice you have no internet connectivity after a power outage. However, it is always best to get help from IT professionals who are experienced in managing business networks.
